San José del Cabo at a glance
San José del Cabo is the seat of the municipality of Los Cabos, at the eastern end of the Tourist Corridor. Cabo San Lucas lies at the other end of the Corridor. The airport (SJD) is 11 km from San José, about 20 minutes by road, which makes the town a short first transfer after landing.
The town grew around a mission founded in 1730 near the estuary where the Manila galleons took on water. Today its center holds Plaza Mijares, the Palacio Municipal, the mission church and a gallery district. Many whale watching, desert and Todos Santos tours pick up from hotels in San José; compare them on our page of Los Cabos excursions.

Mission San José del Cabo and Plaza Mijares
The historic center around the main square.
Plaza Mijares and the Palacio Municipal form the core of the historic center. Both were restored after the hurricane of 1918. The mission church stands next to the square, and the gallery district spreads out behind the church and the plaza.
From mission to today's church
Nicolás Tamaral and José de Echeverría founded the Mission San José del Cabo on 8 April 1730. The Pericú name of the place was Añuití. Keep the mission and the building apart: the church you see today dates from the 20th century and is not the first mission building.

The San José del Cabo Art Walk
Thursday evenings in the gallery district.
The Gallery District Association holds the Art Walk on Thursdays from 5 to 9 p.m., from November to June. During the walk, Álvaro Obregón street is closed to cars. The schedule is a seasonal rhythm, not the opening hours of every gallery, so individual galleries can keep other hours.
The organizer sets the start date of each season, so check it before you plan a Thursday around the walk. Walking the streets and visiting the galleries is free. Food, drinks and any art you buy cost extra.

Estero de San José
A protected wetland at the edge of town.
The Estero de San José is a state ecological reserve, in the category Zona Sujeta a Conservación Ecológica, protected since the early 1990s. In history, the Manila galleons took on water here, which is why the mission was founded close by.
The protected status does not tell you which paths are open on a given day. Check current access locally before you set out, since water levels and weather can change conditions at the mouth of the estuary.
Puerto Los Cabos and the coast
The marina and the beaches near town.
Puerto Los Cabos is a marina near San José del Cabo, a few minutes from the center. The area also has a golf course with 27 holes in three loops of nine, about 10 minutes from the historic center. Puerto Los Cabos is not on the Corridor stretch toward Cabo San Lucas.
Acapulquito and Palmilla are among the beaches with the Blue Flag. A Blue Flag does not replace the beach flag on the day: green means suitable conditions, yellow caution, red dangerous and black a full closure. See the beaches page.
